LiDAR is the upcoming mapping technology for accurate mapping of structures and natural environments, particularly when there is vegetation blocking visibility to the ground. The YellowScan Surveyor model is a high end unit, designed for mounting underneath the DJI Matrice 600 (“M600”). It is well suited to mapping civil engineering projects and forests/highly vegetated areas and is respected for its 4cm precision, 5cm accuracy (flying at typically 50m altitude), with a point density of 85pts/sqm. The unit is packed with high end components – using a Velodyne lidar and a highly regarded Applanix (APX-15 UAV) board for direct georeferencing meaning you don’t need to use GCPs (Ground Control Points) on your drone mission. The tech is nicely integrated by YellowScan (both hardware and in-house processing software) meaning and you do not need to be a surveyor to learn how to use it, you just need an M600 to mount it to. quote

Software

Applanix POSPac UAV, and YellowScan CloudStation are included as standard.

Use Applanix POSPac UAV, to post-process GNSS and inertial data for high accuracy

CloudStation (by YellowScan) provides a complete software solution to create and manipulate point cloud data. It allows you to extract, process and display data immediately after acquisition. The auto-generation of flight lines and the creation of .LAS files are done in just a few clicks. It is a licensed software which provides every customer with a single seat floating license. To allow for remote work in the field, customers have the option to test out the license for up to 30 days. Additionally, the software is provided with support, maintenance and updates. The is an option add-on strip adjustment module with an outstanding algorithm and single-click matching process

As an optional add-on, LiveStation enables you to watch in real-time the 3d model being built to check in real-time whether the LiDAR is, for example, able to penetrate a forest’s canopy and sample the ground. Here is a 4 min video demo and 2-page data sheet

Choice of drone to mount it to

The YellowScan Surveyor lidar unit works optimally with the Matrice 600 (“M600”) due to its lifting power (it can lift up to 5.5kg payload and the YellowScan Surveyor is only 1.6kg inc. the battery), long landing gear legs (optimal space to mount the lidar), and 6 motors for redundancy (peace of mind).

Regarding the M200, the shorter landing gear means the LiDAR unit is closer to the ground than on a M600, and smaller autonomy with a LiDAR payload.

The M300 is the newest Matrice platform, but it requires a very light and compact LiDAR system (under 1.5kg) to fully benefit from its features. As the YellowScan Surveyor is 1.6kg (with battery) , again, we suggest the M600 is optimal.

You can fly commercially without a drone pilot licence, but you must register your drone and get an RPA operator accreditation from CASA. It’s a convenient option for new people wanting to just get their drone in the air legally and start making some money. Remember flying a drone to make money is actually illegal in Australia unless you at least an RPA operator accreditation from CASA (or an RePL or ReOC). Here are 5 good reasons to make sure you are approved by CASA before you fly. How to get an RPA operator accreditation from CASA: Here are the 2 steps you need to do to be allowed (by CASA) to fly a drone for commercial use without needing a licence: Step 1: register your drone here, otherwise you would face a fine up to $11,100. Step 2: get an RPA operator accreditation before you fly here.	If your drone is over 2kg, and you typically prefer to fly for someone else's drone business (not start your own business), it is best to obtain a Remote Pilot Licence. By far the most popular licence option. RePL is typically a 5 day course, covering theory and practical, or do the theory part online + 2 days practical. This drone pilot licence does not expire and there is no renewal required! Minimum age is 17. Get course dates and quotes	Best if your drones are over 2kg and you wish to set up your own drone business and work directly with customers. Typically for aspiring drone businesses owners who plan to hire individual pilots and operate a full time business. Getting a ReOC is a more involved process that requires you to first have an RePL, and to then submit your company procedure and policies to the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) for review and approval. The reward for getting this certification is having more options and less restrictions regarding fly zones, and more industry recognition from potential customers who may decide they only want to hire pilots with the highest available certification level (ReOC holders).
