Chances are, if you live in Australia you have probably never seen a drone light show. In larger countries such as the US, China and in parts of the middle east and Europe, drone light shows are rapidly becoming more widespread because of the grandeur they offer and the uniqueness of the experience. If you see people who are looking at a drone light show they are utterly engaged with it. Corporate event managers see this as a big plus – hundreds of people staring at a huge airborne logo rotating in 3D, made up of a swarm of drones which artistically morph into a choreographed story about the anniversary of a brand or special announcement!

Drone light shows are not environmentally invasive like fireworks. Fireworks pollute the air and are deafening to nearby residents and animals. Cats, dogs and birds can become terrified and run away from home or sustain emotional trauma. Fireworks shows have also started unwanted fires like this example in Adelaide.

Drone light shows also have the capacity to tell a memorable story, not just create a repetitive schedule of explosions in the air. Drone light shows are also significantly less expensive. The Sydney 2019 fireworks cost $5.8M. A variety of smaller shows were cancelled in December 2019 due to communities complaining that the money should be spent on other things.

According to TIME Magazine we are living in The Drone Age – and light shows will be a big part of it, starting in 2020.

Typical project steps and inclusions

Client liaison and job scoping: show duration, size, complexity, location feasibility.
Creative theming, music and choreography.
Digital animation of the show (computer-based simulation of the real show) for client preview and approval.
Rehearsal of the live show for a CASA safety inspector. General CASA liaison and Job Safety Assessment planning.
Rehearsal of the live show for the client – typically the night before the event date.
Permit applications with the relevant council/s and local helipad and aerodromes.
Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPA) Operators Certificate (ReOC) and public liability insurance policy supplied.
Supply of all drone hardware, software and swarming technology, safety and crowd control equipment as per CASA requirements.
Team of 4-7 staff on the night including a Chief Remote Pilot (CRP), tech support team, plus safety officers.
Event photography and videography (regular and aerial).
