VIC, Golf course (fly-over each hole) - Create a 3d map of course
R2F was contracted by a prominent international client to create a 3D model of a world-class golf club. The goal was to gather data systematically to reconstruct a digital twin of a composite course, which could be used for television broadcast, CGI, and telemetry systems.
The project was situated in controlled airspace and within 3 nautical miles of a controlled aerodrome. Due to the complicated airspace, an area approval from CASA was necessary before commencing the project. R2F created and submitted an in-depth risk study and provided regulatory authorities and stakeholders with the confidence that all risks would be effectively and professionally managed.
R2F established over 54 ground control points utilizing an RTK-enabled base station and rover before beginning flight operations. The base station was set up to receive NTRIP corrections from the Auscors network to improve the accuracy of ground control and the final deliverable. Once the composite course was geofenced, R2F's data acquisition strategy was to capture low altitude high resolution oblique images in a double grid pattern. This ensured that the level of detail required to reconstruct accurate geometry of all features was achieved by capturing low altitude opposing oblique images for 3D reconstruction.
Automated missions were planned for each fairway and executed using R2F's Zenmuse X4S drone payload and 2 drones were deployed to ensure efficiency of capture and redundancy in case of any unplanned events. All flight activities were planned around player schedules to ensure minimal impact to members while maintaining the highest level of safety. A dedicated golf professional was also engaged as a safety observer and to manage any interface with the players.
Before uploading the data sets to a cloud storage service daily, R2F quality checked all data using Pix4d. The result was an exceptional delivery of the clients' specifications, on time and within budget.
